Frequently asked questions

About the forms

What order are the Wing Chun forms learned in?

Usually Siu Nim Tau, then Chum Kiu, then Biu Jee, followed by the wooden dummy, the long pole and the knives. Schools differ in when each is taught. There is more in the Wing Chun forms, in order.

What is Siu Nim Tau?

The first form. It is practised standing in one place and trains the stance, the centreline and relaxed, precise arm movement. See Siu Nim Tau section 1.

Wing Chun, Wing Tsun or Ving Tsun: what’s the difference?

They are different romanisations of the same Chinese name, 詠春, used by different lineages and organisations. This site uses “Wing Chun” as the general name, and its lessons follow the Wing Tsun system’s versions of the forms.

Can I learn Wing Chun from an app or videos?

Not on your own. An app can help you remember sequences and see positions from different angles, but Wing Chun depends on partner training and on corrections from a qualified instructor. Use this site alongside classes, not instead of them.

How should I practise the forms at home?

Short, regular sessions tend to work better than occasional long ones. Practise slowly and accurately, within your own limits, and follow your instructor’s guidance on how often and how much. Stop if anything hurts.

About the free sample

Is it free? Do I need an account?

The sample, Siu Nim Tau section 1 and Chum Kiu section 1, is free and needs no account. More forms are in preparation.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, in a modern browser. A larger screen makes it easier to see the figure and the coaching panel together.

Is the 3D figure motion-captured?

No. It is a study animation built from checkpoints. Positions follow the cited sources, but joint angles and timing are approximate.

Where is my practice record saved?

Only in your own browser. Nothing is sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes it. See About, sources and privacy.

I found a mistake. How do I tell you?

Please get in touch with the lesson and step number. Every correction is checked against the sources.
